Frequently asked questions

Are my assets uploaded to a server?
No. All images and data are saved in this device's browser database (IndexedDB). The IMG.DIY server only serves the page itself — it never receives or stores any of your files, which is how the whole IMG.DIY site works.
How many assets can it hold?
It depends on your disk space — modern browsers typically let a site use a large share of available disk (commonly 10 GB or more). The sidebar shows used/available space live.
What if I switch computers or clear browser data?
The library lives in your browser, so clearing site data wipes it too. Get in the habit of clicking Backup regularly to export the whole library as a ZIP (all originals plus folders/tags/ratings/favorites/notes); on any device, click Restore to bring it all back.
How does it compare to desktop clients like Eagle or Billfish — which should I pick?
Different roles: desktop clients do more (browser-extension clipping, AI semantic search, video/font management, hundred-thousand-asset libraries) and suit heavy professionals; this library is zero-install, open-and-go, and fully local-private, ideal for organizing hundreds to thousands of references. Start here and migrate later if you outgrow it — the backup is a standard ZIP + JSON, so your data isn't locked in.
Which file formats are supported?
Any image the browser can decode: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, SVG, AVIF and more. Video, audio and fonts aren't supported.
How do Find similar and color filtering work?
On import it computes a perceptual hash (aHash) and dominant colors (median-cut, sorted into 12 families) for each image, entirely in your browser. Find similar sorts by hash distance; color filter matches families — the same idea as Eagle's equivalents.
Is duplicate detection accurate?
It uses SHA-256 content hashing, so only byte-for-byte identical files are flagged as duplicates — merely similar images are never mistaken for copies.
